Another Place is pleased to present Brand-New Attachment Style, a solo exhibition of work by Jeremy Olson. This is Olson’s first show with the gallery.

The appetite for self realization is bottomless. A new pop-psychological formulation arises to replace an old one like a diet trend, proliferating pamphlets and books and social media infographics. Abbreviations and diagrams abound, gesturing not to greater advancements in our understanding, but instead, to a gaping hole.

In a series of works, Jeremy Olson dives in. A tangle of tubes stands before a desert. An observation tower pierces the night sky. A humanoid creature puzzles over strange, choral-like fragments as if it’s Ikea furniture. A sculpture of an anthropomorphic figure perches before a harsh landscape, glowing at sunset. These are some of the scenes of brand new attachment theory, in which oil paint, concrete, epoxy, foam and resin are used to explore our relationship to the non-human.

Olson reminds us of the power of the anthropomorphic gaze, which can relate even to the horrid and non-human. The world is ending or long gone in his works, and yet it is still made in our image. Before a neon blur, a creature’s eyes widen. Another reads a small book while holding a drink; factories smolder in the distance.

Another kind of attachment style is documented which has yet to be defined. Olson foregrounds this task in his austere, vivid, and startling compositions. In brand new attachment style, Olson reminds us that even in the most absurd settings we will continue to seek answers.

Jeremey Olson (b. 1976) is a Brooklyn-based artist working primarily in painting, with excursions into sculpture and video. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Olson is the recipient of a 2021 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Painting.
