ATM Gallery NYC is pleased to present Where (No)One Is – a solo exhibition of nine works by Aistė Stancikaitė.

Aistė Stancikaitė is a Lithuanian born painter currently living in Berlin. Stancikaitė’s new works create a mesmerizing dreamscape that delves into the realms of desire, sensuality, and intimacy. Notably, her earlier practice was characterized by a remarkable commitment to using only red pencil, mastering techniques of shade, highlight, and texture. This rigor laid the foundation for her current oil and acrylic paintings, which envelop the viewer in a surreal, tantalizing space, isolating one’s essence of self.

Stancikaitė’s compositions are predominantly composed of intense reds that seamlessly transition to deep hues of purples and blues. The power of the gradient hues radiates a physicality that pulls the viewer into its depths, and fosters an alluring reality that oscillates between feelings of entrapment and liberation. Central to the artist’s work, deliberate obscuring of hands and specific body parts through the use of close-ups, alongside the motif of gloves, renders the gender aspect imperceptible. This symbolizes the inherent and universal unfamiliarity within desire, creating a mystery that invites viewers to unravel their narratives within the enigmatic elements of the work. Stancikaitė’s natural proportions and theatrical compositions give a subtle tether to reality, before snapping the viewer into a state of dreamlike bliss through the considered styling and monochromatic color palettes.

Aistė Stancikaitė (b. 1988) is a Lithuanian artist living in Berlin, Germany. Stancikaitė recently presented a solo exhibition, 'Outlines,’ at Cuturi Gallery in Singapore (2023). Recent group exhibitions include ‘Beyond the Veil’ at Guts Gallery in London (2023); ‘Daily Poison,’ at Better Go South in Stuttgart (2023); ‘Fembot’ at The Hole in New York (2023); ‘Queering the Narrative’ at Neuer Aachener Kunstverein in Aachen (2022); ‘Touch Me’ at Kunstraum Potsdam Waschhause’ in Potsdam (2022).
